I am old .. and went to Bass in the Grass

Not me … trying to look inconspicuous amongst a sea of 20-somethings.

Every now and then you are firmly and brutally reminded that you are getting older.

It might be hurting your back while doing light stretches at the gym.  Or seeing a recent photo of Matthew Perry from Friends. Or waking up one day and having to drop your 15-year-old and her friends off to Bass in the Grass (BITG).

Or … actually going to BITG yourself … like I did last night.

Probably like everyone over 40 that attended the concert, my biggest concern was .. “oh God will I be the oldest one there?”

Followed closely by “I am NOT beach-body ready for this .. and what the hell do I wear to this bra-flashing sideshow?! ".

So I spent most of last week cursing my partner for being way too cunning and purchasing tickets last year while we were in the early stages of our relationship, and I was nice and obliging (“sure honey that will be GREAT FUN to do together!”)

BUT. He had the last laugh.

Because turns out there were heaps of us oldies and it was a LOT of fun. And the kids didn’t seem fussed by us at all. (And they were happy and well behaved.)

To celebrate being old at BITG, I have compiled a list of things I heard old people saying (ok, things I also said) at BITG.

  1. Wow, the girls are literally wearing underwear.

  2. The girls wear much less clothes than when I was that age .. my parents would have freaked. Um, wait - is that A G-STRING?!

  3. Hmmm, the boys wear pretty much the same stuff they did when I was that age.

  4. Wow, 10:30pm start for Angus and Julia is so late. Do you think we will last that long?

  5. On reflection, maybe I should have forked out for a ticket to the enclosed ‘parents retreat’ area.

  6. I can’t believe how much better Guy Sebastion was in real life. How good was ‘Battlescars?!

  7. OMG. That toilet was disgusting.

  8. I made it to 11pm! Also, my feet hurt.

  9. That was awesome. LET’S GO NEXT YEAR!

  10. I am really tired but should we quickly swing by the casino or uncle Sam’s on the way home?

Yes, BITG is a great event and I loved it.

Somehow this was my first one ever (crazy, I know), and my partner hadn’t been since the very first one was held 20+ years ago. Also, he was going to wear his vintage BITG cap .. but was scared that would REALLY show his age.

We will be back. Another year older.
