Darwin: Australia’s “Worst City”? Not Even Close
Recently, a Daily Mail journo labelled Darwin the “worst city in Australia.”
It was clearly written to stir the pot, but it got me thinking about the exact opposite … and why I love this place so much.
There’s a reason I’ve lived here my entire life, and it goes far deeper than having family and friends here - though that’s a pretty big bonus.
Darwin has a pull, a character, and a way of life that keeps me here.
And I’ll tell you why.
1. Lifestyle. If you want one unlike anywhere else in the world, come to Darwin. Forget traffic jams because your commute is rarely more than 10-15 minutes. And when the workday’s done, you’re home with plenty of daylight left to actually enjoy life. Meanwhile … how’s your daily 2 hour Melbourne commute working for you?
2. Darwin’s markets. Honestly, they could rival any in the world. From Thursday evenings to weekend mornings, there’s always one to explore. Each market bursts with colour, music and atmosphere, and when it comes to food, the choices are endless. Think sizzling Asian-inspired street eats, fresh local produce, and unique Territory flavours you won’t find anywhere else.

3. Our national parks. We’re spoiled with some of the world’s greatest national parks right on our doorstep. Spur of the moment decision to hang out by a waterfall on the weekend? Cool, jump in your car and head down to Litchfield for the day. You’ll be there in under an hour.

4. Sunset on Mindil Beach. Google it. But here is one of my own from the other day:
5. Our fireworks. This was a negative for you Paul from Daily Mail, but I’ll respectfully disagree, because, we get to let off fireworks for one night every single year. It’s pretty fun. A bit scary, but fun.
6. Vibrant multicultural community. Darwin shines as one of - if not the best - multicultural cities in Australia. And we are all so much better for it as it connects us through food, festivals and traditions, giving us unique character and making us one of the most welcoming places in the country.

8. Foodie haven. Darwin isn’t just about markets and sunsets - it’s also home to some of the best restaurants in the country. From the modern flair of Ella by Minoli, to the long-standing favourites like Nirvana and the iconic Hanuman, the city’s dining scene blends local ingredients with global flavours, offering something special for every palate.
9. The people. They are pretty awesome. Quirky, and sometimes a bit nutty, yes. But also the most laid back humans on the planet.
10. Opportunity. Unlike larger cities where you can get lost in the crowd, Darwin gives people the chance to make their mark. Whether it’s career growth, starting a business, or getting involved in the community, this is a place where ambition is noticed and rewarded. If you’re willing to give it a go, Darwin 100% opens doors.
