Biggest Mob Yummy: Kopi Stop
You know how on TV ads for cleaning products the ‘now clean’ room shines really, REALLY bright? Cartoonishly bright.
Well, Kopi Stop looks like that.
It’s the brightest, cleanest, whitest looking shop in the NT.
Apparently from space you can only see the Great Wall of China and the glowing Kopi Stop.
It’s also one of the most friendly and professional cafes in the NT … plus it has great coffee (they serve ONA beans).
I am a big fan and it makes my top 3 in Darwin for ‘best coffee’ along with D town Roasters at Rapid Creek Markets and … well, let’s not get into that right now. When I do my ‘top 10’ coffee places we can cross that bridge and argue like mad dogs.
I love long macchiato’s and don’t care that ordering them makes me look like a wanker. As does my bright pink Keep Cup.
But a long mac is the best way to drink coffee. Just coffee, hot water and a delicious bit of crema. Straight to the brain. Ahhhh .. what a socially acceptable drug it is!
Kopi Stop’s long macs are YUM plus they draw a cute face in the froth. Sometimes it’s the little things like a tiny, dopey face that make you happy :-) See!
Their coffees are brown, hot and steamy - just like Her Territory (HT) - and the NT News once rated them best in town. I reckon the paper should have used the headline ‘The one others should Kopi’.
Yep, lame.
Anyhoo, my fav thing to eat there is the Singaporean breakfast (I like ‘Set A’ with Kaya toast but there are three choices). It’s in my top 3 favourites breakfasts and, I think, Kopi is the only NT place serving this.
Since I originally wrote that sentence I have found out it’s not true at all and the, also excellent, Quarter cafe in the Darwin mall also does them.
Dad joke alert: A Singapore Breakfast is comprised of toasted white bread with sweet Kaya (a fruit) jam and poached eggs. In Singapore, they call the Singapore Breakfast … ‘breakfast’.
You can (and should) add a little pepper and soy sauce to the eggs (it’s in a box on the table) and dip the Kaya toast into the googy joy and eat it all up .. unless you are like HT and eggs make you sick. Best avoid.
I haven’t checked that you are supposed to dip the toast but I ate them that way in Singapore and no-one frowned so I just kept moving forward.
Kopi Stop serve other good food like wonton soup, laksa, chicken rice and lots of cakes and other tasty looking baked stuff .. but I haven’t tried any of that because I just want the Singaporean Breakfast.
Kids love their H/C/T croissant and hot chocolate .. little people have told me both were ‘good’.
The always excellent staff wear cool laboratory type clothes that give the impression something quite scientific is happening in there. And they say ‘hello’ and ‘goodbye’ (and sometimes even your name) better than any place I have ever gone to which is great ‘business running’ by the owners!
Thumbs up rating: 4/5
Location: 1/2 Harriet Place, Darwin CBD.
