Biggest Mobs Yummy - Uncle Sam’s Hot Chips and Gravy
Last time I was at Uncle Sam’s I became the first drunk person to ever eat there. AND I ordered a container of fried rice and potato bake, which was the worst combination since Harrison and Bronte on MAFS.
It was a confused, heavy, creamy, oily, unsettling mess - much like Uncle Sam’s customers most Saturday nights - but was also drunkenly yum (from memory).
After the Tim Minchin concert at Darwin Amphitheatre last year, Her Territory (HT) and I rode a Neuron Scooter to Uncle Sam’s to try their kinda famous chips and gravy (by the way, you can’t get up the hill beside the Casino with 2 people on a scooter).
Everyone loves chips and gravy … including my food-loving Italian friend Gino and HT who really rated Uncle Sam’s ones and didn’t hide the fact.
Like a toasted sandwich, it’s pretty hard to totally f-ck up chips and gravy, but it’s not easy to totally nail it either.
I was tipsy this particular visit, BUT I am still certain Uncle Sam’s nailed it.
The GRAVY is dark brown and yum (just like HT ) and also good-type gooey.
No doubt there is lots of salt and some sort of meaty gravy juice lurking in there but, even as a 80-90% vegetarian, I turned a blind eye (sorry cows). The result is gravy that is ‘eat by itself’ type yum.
The CHIPS are not too crispy, or too thick or too salted .. they are just right. Sure, they are probably slowly killing you BUT they taste really good.
Like all really yummy food, this ‘meal’ got better the more you ate and I can confirm they are made FRESH (it’s weird describing fried stuff as ‘fresh’, but they were). I remember a place in China describing their yoghurt as ‘factory fresh’ and thinking ‘mmmm, that’s not actually fresh but ok’.
Anyhoo, I normally prefer fat, soggy chips with lots of tangy vinegar and tomato sauce but I loved the Uncle Sam’s ones too. They work.
A medium serving looks like too much but is plenty for two people.
If I was alone, or drunker or it wasn’t so early into my new relationship, I would have licked the gravy container and the salty chips box.
I suspect these are the best chips and gravy in Darwin and the Territory. Good job Uncle Sam’s.
